It all began in Columbus, Ohio, when the Cardwell family opened their very first McDonald’s. What started as a single restaurant quickly became a neighborhood favorite — a place where families gathered after Little League games and students grabbed breakfast before class. Those early years set the tone for everything that followed: great food, friendly service, and genuine community connection.
After seven years of steady growth, we opened our second restaurant on Cleveland’s east side. It wasn’t just about expansion — it was about bringing familiar faces and family values to a new community. From local sponsorships to charity drives, this location became a symbol of how deeply we believe in being part of the neighborhoods we serve.
With multiple restaurants now thriving, the family officially formed Cardwell Family Restaurants, creating a unified team and vision for future growth. This milestone marked the beginning of a long tradition of investing in people — from kitchen crew to management — and ensuring every guest felt the warmth of a locally owned business backed by a national brand.
McDonald’s Midwest Region honored Cardwell Family Restaurants with the Outstanding Local Partner Award for contributions to youth programs, local schools, and charitable organizations. That same year, our team launched the “Fries for Schools” fundraiser, which helped support classroom needs and extracurricular activities in dozens of districts across Ohio.
Our growth crossed state lines as we opened a new restaurant in Indianapolis. The move brought new challenges and new opportunities, but our focus stayed the same — building teams that care deeply about their customers and communities. This expansion laid the groundwork for a broader Midwest presence and helped us share our values with even more families.
We launched our first Leadership & Development Program, designed to help team members grow their careers within the company. Many of today’s managers and supervisors began their journey through that initiative — proof that when we invest in our people, we all rise together.
As part of our commitment to sustainability, all locations transitioned to energy-efficient lighting, waste reduction programs, and locally sourced suppliers when possible. These changes weren’t just operational — they reflected our belief that caring for our environment is part of caring for our communities.
This year marks five decades of serving our neighbors across Ohio, Indiana, and Michigan. From a single Columbus restaurant to a growing family of six locations, we remain dedicated to the same mission: providing great food, supporting our communities, and treating every guest like part of the family.
